Chamber September Forum
Coming Up!
Chamber Forum – Jobs for Southern Oregon…the next Napa Valley – Tuesday, September 14, Noon at the Village Green Resort – Please RSVP TODAY!
Umpqua Community College President, Blaine Nisson, will address community members, political leaders and regional media on the impact of the wine industry in Southern Oregon. In a Sunset Magazine article this past January, the wine industry in Southern Oregon was favorably compared to California’s Napa Valley as the “next big wine country”.
Dr. Nisson will highlight the emergence of the Southern Wine Institute on the Umpqua Community College campus. This institute is an economic development initiative for the wine “cluster” (hospitality, tourism, etc.) and other business in the seven counties of Lane, Douglas, Josephine, Jackson Coos, Curry and Klamath counties. Umpqua Community College established the Southern Oregon Wine Institute in 2008. SOWI, under the auspices of the UCC Foundation, is in the early phases of a capital campaign to build a comprehensive teaching winery on their campus that will support the wine industry in this region. The state-of-the-art facility will include:
- Living laboratory of student-cultivated vineyards
- Commercial-scale winemaking facility
- Private testing facility to serve all regional wineries
- Wine incubator to help new artisans plan, start and market their wineries
- Event center for conferences, meetings and receptions
Reservations for this forum can be made by calling the Chamber office at (541) 942-2411. Let us know if you want a turkey sandwich or vegetarian sandwich. The cost per plate is $10 and you can make your checks payable to the Cottage Grove Area Chamber of Commerce.

Gathering in the Grove is Back! – Iris Vineyards tasting room, 195 Palmer Avenue, 5:30 – 7:00pm
The summer has come and now is almost gone which means the Gathering in the Grove is back! What is the “Gathering in the Grove”? It is another great Chamber networking event to help you grow your business. If we are going to help our local merchants we really have to know them and chamber networking events provide the premier opportunity to have a business showcased. Many of our local businesses already know the Chamber holds two evening networking events each month; The Gathering in the Grove on the 1st Thursday of each month and Business after Hours on the 3rd Thursday. The Cottage Grove Chamber of Commerce developed the “Gathering in the Grove” in order to provide a unique opportunity for our small business to be showcased. Each Gathering promotes one to three businesses instead of just one like Business after Hours. Our next “Gathering” is sponsored by Iris Vineyards and our highlight businesses are Coast Fork Watershed Council and Friends of Mt. David. Mark your calendar and come check it out!

At the very southern tip of the Willamette Valley, deep in the mist covered hills east of Cottage Grove, lies a secret. No, not that kind of a secret! It is a rarity among bands. Five guys born and raised in the same small town who have been playing music together for over 35 years and still actually enjoy each other’s company! The band consists of the Munsell brothers, David on guitar, keyboard, and lead vocals, Curt: percussion and lead vocals, Ken Bachelder: bass and vocals, Joe Tennis: lead guitar and vocals and Brian Gushwa: drums and vocals. Blend together rock and blues, throw in a little country and original material for flavor and you have a tasty, eclectic musical brew. So whether your thing is kickin’ off your shoes and dancing, or just kickin’ back and listening, ‘the Ridge’ has got just what you need!

Step sisters Meg Graf and Vicki Cox co-founded Calamity Jazz in 1999 with the goal of learning how to “really” play authentic traditional jazz. Since then, their band has evolved from a group strictly local in Eugene to an all-state/all-star band; featuring talented veterans from Portland, Waldport, Walterville, Toledo, and Roseburg. The rapid maturity of the band is owed to several key factors; one of which is the excellent mentorship and networking opportunities offered at the adult traditional jazz camps in San Diego and Sacramento. Another significant factor defining the band is the dedication of its musicians in very often driving in excess of 200 miles one way to be with each other to play or rehearse. Calamity Jazz is not only a fine blend of musicians, but also a close-knit group of good friends; always happy for a chance to get together — especially if it involves making music. Once approached about whom she would pick if she had an opportunity to build her own “Dream Band,” leader Vicki Cox asserted, “I’ve already done that.”
